Experimenting. In a sketchbook I taped off various triangles.
Then I painted over with various transparent colours – image two shows the results after the tape has been removed.
I taped off more triangles (image three) and used more transparent paint.
Image four shows the results.
My intent was to create compositional structure over which to paint a landscape in the hopes that the underlying triangles would create a play to lights and darks throughout the painting.
The next step was to paint a layer of transparent white to push everything back and give it some cohesion.
This shows where I ended up. I don’t know that it was as successful as I’d envisioned it (ain’t that always the case?)
Image four shows some promise as a pure abstract, but that wasn’t the plan. Next time I think I will develop the landscape composition first and then do the triangle exercise.

I like this, both the process and the final result. The process looks like a lot of fun to do and the end result is magical.

I love this experiment! The final landscape has intriguing vestiges of the triangles in the background. I agree the triangles could have stood as their own abstract piece, or taken in another direction. Something to try another time. But the landscape is still a fine piece in its own right, with subtle hints of abstract shapes giving it an air of mystery. Thanks for sharing your process.
