Collectif Creativity: 19Aug2023

by Susan Irving

I have been messing about with this one for a couple of weeks now, arranging and rearranging all the bits and pieces. But today I needed the space it was taking up on my desk,  so decided to just go ahead, get sticky and DO it.

Here is the process from start to finish for those who may be interested:

1. Poured a layer of liquid acrylics in various colours on the canvas.

2. Took a few long strips of  Saran Wrap and stretched  them over the paint then pushed and pulled them about until the desired shapes and mixes began to appear.

3. After a few hours  removed the saran wrap and  looked at the canvas to see if anything came to mind, regarding the shapes.  Sometimes this can take days or weeks.

4. Decided to embellish some of the shapes.  I wanted them to be  raised, some with random patterns, so I made a few acrylic skins in small flat containers and left them to dry.

5.  Decided the foreground needed a softer look, so glued torn strips and bits of  previously painted and prepared bleeding tissue where needed.

6. After a few days, when the skins were dry, I peeled them out of the containers and cut them into shapes, leaving one larger one formed in a circular container intact. Cut the rest of them into shapes and began placing them on the canvas, but not gluing them yet.

7.  Got out my button box to see what I could find. Chose some buttons.

8.  Got out a bead box.  Also found a circular steel plate and some other metallic things.  Began placing things and doing a lot of rearranging. This went on for over a week.

9.  Today:  began gluing using a soft gell gloss medium. Very messy!

10.  Placed the circular skin on the circular metal disk, glued it to the canvas.

11.  Took out my plastic T-shirt  paints and drew some stems and stuff on the canvas. Also took out Posca markers and drew a bit where I felt it was needed.

Decided it is probably finished apart from possibly varnishing it.   I am (so far anyway) calling it A Summer  Scorcher.
