Diary of an artwork (excerpt)
by Laura Peck
15 May 2023: My next challenge is an opportunity. This collage, stamps on cradle board, was not chosen by the Jury of the Juried Show in Williamstown.
I hate waste, I love stamps. I need to do something.
Will I succeed in making it more appealing to the eyes and to the heart?
Second chance, second life, a better title too.
Sapristi, pense l’artiste, qui comprend la décision du jury ne pas avoir été choisie.
Saisit la chance, pense l’activiste, qui s’en retourne à ses sources, ravie.
June 12 What’s the title? Asked Yvonne
What’s in a title by the way?
Is it a thought or a thing? An emotion or an invitation? A perception or a provocation?
I let the work sit on the bench for a while – as I would bread –
Unlike bread, it did not rise itself
I had to forage through a lot of stamps, blue, green or red
Before my fingers finally found the ones, the chosen.
The bench was messy and chaotic yet never confusing
And like bread, it took shape under my astonished eyes
And it led to three other pieces
And I liked what I saw.
But then… the title
Following my rule of shorter is better – when it comes to title –
This is the sequence I wrote down words to get it – see the last on the list.
I am curious to know which one you prefer. Please leave a comment.
- Why do you care
- La beauté des laids
- Where’s the intruder
- The ugly intruder
- The pretty intruder
- Le beau, le laid, l’amoureux
- L’amour, toujours

[Ed. Re jurying. What doesn’t get into one show may win at the next, it is a subjective art!]
Pssst, you. Yeah you! Share your creative activities! Send JPG image(s) to cagac.ca@gmail.com with a few words telling us what moved you to produce . . . something! Share how creativity affects your life. Please include title & media for each image.
Hmmm…. I don’t like any of those titles. But it seems to me, if I’m so rude as to bluntly tell you I don’t like your choices, I ought to have something to offer. So I’ve been going back and forth through your “Diary of an Art Work” and found a few that I prefer:

Your diary excerpt is a poem. When you display your artwork, viewers would appreciate it for its own sake.
I like the final art work and I like the accompanying poem.

Laura:
I found picking a title tough. I settled on L’amour, toujours because of the several heart images and the stamp with pair of hands with interlocking fingers.
